Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle

Just a lame little post today - I'm just spent from that J.U.D.G.E. thing and I need to take it easy, recharge.

Here's the Evel Knievel stunt cycle, which my friend had. If memory serves, you launched Evel and his stunt cycle out of the "Rev-Booster" and tried to make him jump over shit. We soon escalated to launching Evel into brick walls, then swimming pools, then at piles of dog poo, until finally climaxing in a glorious kerosene-fueled blazing death jump off my friend's garage. Viva Knievel indeed! That little fucker was tough!

Plus, miniature Evel Knievel came with a swagger stick (see above) which was really big in British Colonial India back in the day. I believe those are called "pimp canes" now.

But even miniature Evel Knievel had his limits. For instance:

That's right, it could jump a standard encyclopedia set -- up through the letter "W." Jumping all the way to XYZ? That's insane, it can't be done! Don't do it Knievel! Somebody stop him, he's going to kill himself!

As many times as I've seen this ad, I've never noticed the pimp cane. And now it's all I'm going to notice.

I used to buy a handful of old comics from a used bookstore when I was a wee lad, most of which had this ad in them. It took me a little while to realize ads like this featured toys long past their shelf life. Of course, now there's eBay...

I had 2 different toy sets, the bike & the drag car with a cool parachute that never worked right. Both Evels met their demise on the stairway on my parents house. The launch pad was the track from the Hot Wheels drag set another cool toy with a parachute that did not work. Ever notice how the wire would stick out of Evels legs & arms. I always wanted the RV to that had a built in ramp.
Keep up the great articles on 70s / 80s comics & toys.

I'm not going to go as far as g.bob and proclaim it the best toy, but it was one of the coolest toys from that period. My brother and I each had one and played with those things for hours and hours. As already indicated, it was near indestructible, no matter what you ran it into -- try doing that with today's disposable toys!!

My brother Mark had the Evel Knievel cycle and his big sister, me, had the Derry Daring cycle. We would sit across the street from each other and race them to see whose would make it across fastest. When the car ran over Evel Knievel, and it popped back up and kept going, it proved itself to be perhaps the best toy EVER! Wish I still had these!
