Star Trek Week Begins!

I've been feeling kinda Star Treky lately.

I am a big fan of Star Trek in all its many forms. I should qualify that: when I say "big fan of Star Trek" I am speaking in realtive terms, i.e., a big fan compared to normal people. I don't consider myself a Trekkie or a Trekker, I don't speak Klingon, I don't belong to an imaginary starship crew, I have never referred to Gene Rodenberry as "The Great Bird of the Galaxy," I don't dress up in costumes or tell the cashier at the supermarket to live long and prosper, and I don't own a fake bat'leth. I'm not even sure if that's how you spell bat'leth. You know what I'm talking about: that curvy scythe/sword thing Klingons use.

Anyway, although I have not devoted all or part of my life to Star Trek, I still consider myself a big Star Trek fan. The Wrath of Khan is one of my favorite movies of all time - I don't just think it's the best Star Trek movie, I think it's the Best Movie. I've read more than my share of Star Trek books, including those James Blish ones from back in the day.

And yes, I have a bunch of Star Trek comic books which I would like to talk about with you.

So come - join me this week as I look at the worlds of Star Trek through the lens of comic books! I know: through the lens of comic books? That makes no sense.

Added bonus: LOL Klingon screencaps! Everyone loves Klingons - only some p'tahks love them more than others...

Oddly enough, last night (after we finished watching the incredibly interesting Russian pseudo-superhero movie Night Watch), I watched an episode of the Star Trek Animated Series for the first time in decades. Those are pretty unintentionally hilarious.

I have yet to see much of the remastered original series, yet, but what I've seen looks pretty sweet.

Re: the remastered TOS episodes: you will freak out about Sulu's horrible complexion. He looks like an Asian Larry Fishburne. It's like, damn, I didn't need it to be THAT hi-def!

Yay! Heavily photo-referenced Star Trek comics!

Lewis Lovhaug said...

See the remastered versions of Day of the Dove and especially the Doomsday Machine. They are made of win.

Also, I can't wait to see what you've got for us with Star Trek week! Any chance of seeing the bizarre first issue of the Gold Key Star Trek comics that, besides for the names of characters, is nothing like the regular TV series?

Just throwing out a suggestion here - and I'm not complaining, mind you - but given that your assorted theme "weeks" seldom restrict themselve to 7 calendar days or 5 business days, why not start calling them things like "Star Trek Indeterminate Period of Time" instead?

David Campbell said...

Smart-ass!

But you make a good point...

Dave, you used both the words bat'leth and p'tahks, so I think you technically do fall into the Klingon-speaking classification of Star Trek Geeks. What a nerd!

Kahplah!

(From a similarly classified life long Star Trek Geek)

Pish posh. Those words get dropped like 50 times whenever there's an episode with Klingons as part of the action. It's like knowing phaser and make it so or the live long and prosper handsign.

"I've been feeling kinda Star Treky lately."

Prune juice will clear that right up.

Arex never got any respect on that show...and do NOT get me started with the infamous tripod jokes...

Anonymous said...

Ooo, ooo! Do we get to see Dave's take on that Star Trek Vs. X-men crossover??

Chris Arndt said...

Whatever the Klingon words are for Dick or Jerk... you fit, Dave.

For you have started your Trek Week on my Finals Week!

Now. Postpone it for seven days or I will wreak a holy vengeance upon you. I swear it upon my honor, your honor, and Terry Farrell's eyes, hair, face, and body. Because all of her is fun to look at.

And as soon as I finish the Finals you will see my take on Star Trek week on my blog and on Monitor Duty.

For I could defeat Dave Campbell in mortal combat, in a honorable blood feud, for he is from Seattle, and I am from the Midwest! My Michigan-honed toughness and strength would shatter that Starbucks-swiller.

So beware my wrath or I will chuck my TOS/DS9 collector VHS set at your head,Dave, and follow it up with 1981-year tiny die-cast Star Trek: TMP Enterprise and Klingon Cruiser models.

Now. Put it off.

Also: Dave already told us what he thought of Star Trek/X-Men... that it was hilarious that the Trek comics were drawn in Trek comics style, with Starfleet uniform tunics drawn realistically around a pastiche of William Shatner's build (because Scott McCloud would tell you, using different nouns, that it's not actually William Shatner but an illustrated approximation, a pastiche to put "Kirk" in our imaginations as we imagine the world), and Spock's, and the other characters... and right next to Trek characters drawn like Trek comic characters were X-Men in skintight X-costumes and X-uniforms and in Marvel Super-Hero house style... meaning bulky sixpack shoulder strap Cyclops was standing next to normal human dressed Captain Kirk.

Which IS NOT what you should see! If I was a fanboy editor I'd demand that both sets of characters would stick to one house style and not go with both respective house styles because that's the way it is! Because that's how you challenge artists to not phone it in!

Also: the remastered TOS episodes rock. But my problem with them? Will be revealed next week.

So.... Dave... do not cross me, or you will feel my wrath.

Also: Oh, and tell Blogger that Zemo is not spelled and "xehmo" It's like my word verification wants to fight Kapten Ameareka.

I consider myself a Trek fan in exactly the same way. I feel that I will enjoy this.

Well...I DID watch Galaxy Quest a few nights ago. Now THAT'S a good movie!

David Campbell said...

Chris Arndt: I defy you!

Lewis Lovhaug said...

Coming soon: The Wrath of Chris Arndt!

"I'll chase him 'round the world's worst villains and 'round the theme weeks and 'round the bad comic reviews before I give him up!"

Siskoid said...

I'll be reading.

Of course, I'm running Star Trek Year, but that's cuz I'm one of the folks you say have gone too far.

No uniforms, no conventions, no Klingon (besides what I need to get a glass of wine in a restaurant), just pure unadulterated CRAZY.

nightfly said...

Heimdall - I say your Star Trek week goes too far!
Siskoid - And I say your Star Trek week doesn't go too far enough!

Now THAT'S cross referencing, baby.

Bubba said...

"...and I don't own a fake bat'leth."

Yes, a fake bat'leth. Even money that Dave has a real one.

Siskoid said...

Bubba: Agreed.

And a mek'leth to protect his back.

Dave, I think you missed a golden opportunity by not starting out your Star Trek Week post with "Captain's Blog, Stardate whateverthehellcrap, etc., etc..." On the other hand, that omission does support your non-nerdiness, so that's a plus.

James Blish is a name that I haven't thought of in forever. I can still remember checking out Star Trek Readers 1-3 out from the library as a kid. Those things were huge--nearly as massive as Scotty's liver.

Harvey Jerkwater said...

Jeebus. All these comments and nobody's said it yet. So I will.

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!

Thank you. Carry on.

Rains said...

Nice Show!!! You can watch it from here, So go ahead and Download Star Trek Episodes for free. Star Trek is a classic series. William Shatner did good job and Leonard Nimoy did a good job. Star Trek had good writing, music, sets, directing and acting.
