And we’re back.
I return, staggering back from my hiatus all bearded and wild-eyed and smelling of wet wool. I have tread the Wilderness, my friends. I’ve been to The Edge. I stood and looked down. A hiatus? No. A vision quest.
A few things first: Alex Toth died while I was out! Damn it, man! I feel like, I don’t know, like I could have done something if I had been here. I’m never going on hiatus again.
I was a huge fan of Alex Toth when I was a kid, even though I didn’t know it at the time. I loved the look and feel of Space Ghost and The Herculoids and all the Hanna-Barbera adventure cartoons. When I grew older I began to appreciate Toth’s simple, striking design work. Alex Toth was a ninja master of great skill, and he will be missed.
On the fine site Comic Art Community, somebody posted a bunch of Toth model sheets for cartoons like Space Ghost and Josie and the Pussycats in Space.
You heard me right: Josie and the Pussycats in Space. Now that is high concept.
Moving on, go here and bear witness to one man’s myopic devotion to the Man o' Steel. The League of Melbotis is deeply, deeply committed to Superman, in a manner that is both frightening and admirable.
Finally, I am going to make a lot of money and buy this boat: It’s the Ellips catamaran from Elorca, and I want it.
It’s like a Megaforce AquaRaider; all it needs is a laser cannon and a big CB aerial. Not only does it look cool, it is bad-ass. The Ellips can do 65 knots. It doesn’t have a bridge, it has a cockpit! You would have to dress up in some kind of crazy futuristic outfit in order to pilot the Ellips.
I want it so bad. I want it more than I wanted a bionic arm when I was a kid.
Will you buy me one? Please? I will blog about whatever stupid comic you want. Brute Force? Lords of the UltraRealm? Jim Nastics? I will whore myself out if you just buy me this $170,000 boat!!!
Sorry.
All right, hiatus is over. It's over like Ricky Martin, baby. I am back, and I feel fabulous. I feel young-Matthew-Modine-good. I feel Korvac good! Now it is on. It's on like Wrath of Khan!
Let's talk about some fucking comic books!

Welcome back, you had me worried you were burned out on the silly world of comics. I eagerly await your first review.
"Jim from the League of Melbotis is deeply, deeply committed to Superman, in a manner that is both frightening and admirable."
Well. Frightening.
Welcome back!
And your boat is on my "post-lottery to do list".
Hey Dave,
Welcome home buddy!
Great 1st post back.
Not too strenuous, but a copius amount of goodness to get us back in the swing.
Oh, and for DarkJawa...those were CARTOON guides.
The Fantastic Four cartoon back in the 1960's was for kids and network TV may have had a problem with having a Purple PLANET eater.
Just a guess.
I sort of remember those episodes (have some on tape...somewhere) and they had the Big G at about 12 foot high for the most part. I think he grew a bit towars the end.
Great stuff!

The village was filled with the songs of children. There was a great feast and much rejoicing. Added to which they passed around the virgins.
YAAY
Dave's back! Kick it Iceberg...
"is this true or false, well ya never know, as you're locked to the pulse of the rhyme flow"
word verification: "ayzfo"
the sound the universe makes when Korvac gets all Ultimate Nullifier on its ass
Looking forward to more reviews... but I loved Hiatus Week(s).
You should feel privileged, my work decided to ban your blog. I can read any other blog I want, just not yours.
I have always had a deep deep love for Space Ghost. Never knew about Alex Toth. Thank you great wise sage dave.
You've got me singing the Josie and the Pussycats theme.
'Guitars and sharp b'flats.....'
Hey thats right it mentions Persia in the song doesn't it. Hey that shows how old it is. It existed before Iran. Either that or Iran was just not a good enough rhyme.
I've been obsessed with boats lately. If you become A Guy with a Boat, you will be my total hero. Welcome back, Dave!
Also, I want to see a live-action Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space movie.
Alex Toth rules, and not just because he's a Magyar.
I have one of his Zorro trade paperbacks (he goes off on the Disney folks over the scripts), and I used (alas) to have a couple of issues of The Fox, that he did for (I think) Eclipse in the '80s.
Flights of angels, Alex.
Forgot to add...I'd put Toth in the same league as Will Eisner, if not quite at the same spot in the standings.
'iqzuhdr'--the sound Sergeant Garcia makes in a spit-take.
Nice to have you back. I really enjoyed your Hiatus Week sketches (especially Floating Impending Doom Action-Lincoln).
...enough toadying! The accursed Chris Sims has refused my reasonable request that he review the latest Apocalypse-featuring run on the X-Men, that it may be mocked back into the spiraling oblivion from whence it came! If you do this thing for me, I promise you an unwavering loyalty which not even death can break.
...pretty please?
I'll see a guy about getting you that boat if you do something on Aquaman...
Here are the actual lyrics to BOTH the original JOSIE and the PUSSYCATS cartoon AND the Josie & the Pussycats in OUTER SPACE cartoon.
Hey... let's all sing along.
You KNOW you WANT to:
JOSIE & The PUSSYCATS
Josie and the Pussycats
Long tails and and ears for hats
Guitars and sharps and flats
Neat, sweet, a groovy song
You're invited, come along.
Hurry, Hurry
See ya all in Persia
Or maybe France
We could be India
Or perchance
Be with us in Bangkok
Make no difference
Everywhere the actions at
We're involved with this or that
Cone along now
Josie and the Pussycats
No time for purrs and pats
Won't run when they here scat
There where the plot begins
Come on and watch the good guys win
Josie and the Pussycats
Josie and the Pussycats.
JOSIE & The PUSSYCATS - IN OUTER SPACE
Josie, in outer space
Pussycats are all in place
Ahh, blasting off on another chase
Mars, stars, the milky way
When they're groovin' who can say
Buckle up your seatbelts.
They could be in orbit (in the stars)
On a spooky planet (maybe Mars)
There's no way of knowing
When they're groovin' way above the atmosphere,
Trying to get back to here.
They're blasting off now
Josie's on a rocket ride
Pussycats all by her side
Bleep Bleep is the kooky guide
Come along and dig the chase
With the Pussycats in outer space
The Pussycats in outer space
Damn you Dave.
Damn you for making me do that.
Damn you to OUTER SPACE!
(not really. I loves ya, Dave!)

Brute Force? You've gotta do Brute Force! I have a few issues of that one from back in the day, and I always wondered how it ended.
Wow. You post something for the amusement of five people, and, uhmmm... Well, the important thing is that we clear up that The League is a different guy from Jim.
Anyway, I'm enjoying Dave's Longbox, and my old college roommate saw me here and e-mailed me, so while I'm vaguely horrified to see my post mentioned here, at least I heard from that guy.
Welcome back! It's about time you came back and made with the funny! I'm in withdrawl.
I think that Josie & The Pussycats, while in space, should make a publicity stop on Space Ghost's talk show. High-larity.
Three things:
1) That boat reminds me of the show Thunder in Paradise, which featured Hhulk Hogan, best known for such cinematic slassics as "Santa with Muscles" and "Mr.Nanny."
2) I'm supposed to believe that the Josie and the Pussycats sing about Bangkok? No way.
3) I'm looking forward to once more reaping the beneifts of Dave's rummaging around in his long box.
