A goodbye to Mike Wieringo

Newsarama reported that artist Mike Wieringo has died at the age of 44.

Mike Wieringo's credits include Robin, The Flash, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and his own comic creation Tellos. I loved Wieringo's animated-style art, which was characterized by clean lines, a strong sense of structure and form, and a playful energy and sense of fun. My favorite work of his was his run on The Flash - Wieringo drew neat speed effects and one bad ass Wally West. We need more artists like Mike Wieringo in comics, not fewer.

Thanks and goodbye from a long-time fan.

  3. Wow, that is just so sad. I really liked his art. Plus, he was so young.

  4. WHAT! (I seriously yelled that out loud. Good thing I'm not at work right now). I just checked his blog on friday.

That sucks more even more than when Seth Fisher died.
To my mind, he was truly one of the few modern comic artists of any skill. He should have lived to be a crochety old man like Jack...

Truly a sad day. I too was one of those who checked Mike's site daily and have decorated my office with some of his sketches.

    Via con dios 'Ringo.

Nothing new to add (but I'll add it anyway, I guess). I also enjoyed Wieringo's style and am saddened by his too-early passing.

    Thanks for the heads-up, Dave.

I read that early this morning on Newsarama and I literally FELT the loss.

My wife saw my face and couldn't understand why I looked like someone kicked me in the gut.

44, a vegetarian and supposedly walked or jogged?

    Damn.

When I went to the grocery store later in the day I made sure to put back the eggs because I thought of him.
    (MASSIVE heart attack, y'know)

I TRULY loved his work, his attitude and humor.

One of the very FEW artists that I would have liked to have seen draw Doctor Strange on a more frequent basis.

And from me, there is no higher praise.

    God Bless, 'Ringo!

  8. wow, that sucks. I thought he had a pretty nice run on friendly neighborhood spidey, as well...

big loss for the industry & the world (not to mention his family... damn, that is a young age to be dying.)

  9. This one was pretty much a kick in the gut to say the least. Mike's strong confident lines made his art seem effortless. It is truly a loss to the medium of sequential art.

He was truly a fantastic storyteller, with a delightful, crisp, dynamic style.

Rest in peace, Mike. You will be missed.

  14. A sad time for all comics fans, I think. I've said this to friends who collect, and I'll say it again...I think comic shops should be giving out black armbands for this. I don't like to think of a world without any more Mike Wieringo comics.

  15. Vegetarian, plus 100+ temperatures and high humidities. He had health problems.

He was working to keep his cholesterol down. Even so, his heart was under some stress. The extremely high temperatures and the typically high humidity didn't help matters any. The stress triggered a massive heart attack, and the paramedics didn't get there in time.

    Damn.

Death can be a bastard at times. Fella's healthy most of the time, but then conditions get bad and his health goes fuck all.

Take care of yourselves, you never know when you'll be relocated.

It can't work in fact, that is exactly what I believe.
