It's Guy Gardner Week, poozers!

Recovering from painful dental procedure. Think my dentist was from Abu Ghraib.

Anyway, my head is full of pain and thoughts of Guy Gardner. Therefore, let's make this Guy Gardner "Week."

More soon. Oww...

Guy Gardner rules. I have a ton of old GL comics from the 70s and 80s that feature him. Let me know if you need scans.

That's a good one, but when it comes to talking shit to Batman, it's hard to top the guy that talked shit about kicking Batman's ass after he'd previously kicked Batman's ass. Yes, I'm talking about the 100% pure awesomeness that is Ben Turner. Any chance of a Bronze Tiger post, Dave?

Not being aware of Guy Gardner is acceptable, he's a tool, but Bronze Tiger? You're a philistine who should not be allowed on a comics blog! All hail Ben Turner!

OMG, I never even thought of his costume that way. Wildcat had him beat by at least a generation, though. Ted Grant, you old devil.

What procedure did you have done? I have been avoiding dental work for over ten years now so I know that I am over due!!! BTW I have a passing knowledge of Guy Garder, and I think he is kinda lame, in concept. Of course, not as lame as avoiding dental care for more than 10 years.

  20. I just checked out the wiki on Bronze Tiger: He was something of a dick, wasn't he?

I just checked out the wiki on Bronze Tiger: He was something of a dick, wasn't he?

Well, yes and no. It's kind of complicated, as you can tell from the Wiki bio. Basically he had a pretty messed-up background: a lot of pent-up anger coupled with an extreme natural aptitude for violence. When you kill your first man at like 13 (trying to defend his Mom), nothing good tends to come of it. Studying the martial arts was an attempt to channel and control that anger, but that just made him more deadly too. And from that point on, how good or bad he was pretty much depended on whether he had his rage under control or not. When he didn't, hell yes he was a dick. But he was cool as hell when he had his shit together.

Of course, the whole getting brainwashed by assassins thing didn't exactly help any. (It seldom does, in my experience.) He did plenty of terrible things during that period, but he was rescued and got deprogrammed, and that's when he started working with the Suicide Squad. (In the greatly missed Suicide Squad series in the late 80s/early 90s, which is the main source that we know him from. Dave's done at least one post about it, if you search the Archives.) That book was 8 kinds of awesome, and he was part of that awesomeness.

Basically Bronze Tiger is one of the best non-superpowered martial artists in the DC universe, a guy that's so good it almost is a superpower, and who can take on people with powers and still be effective. Personally--and I'm sure not everybody will agree with me on this--I'd say that in terms of martial arts skill he is definitely at least a smidgen better than Batman. Not just because he's beaten Batman, which he has, but because hand-to-hand combat is pretty much all he does. Batman could be that good if he took the time, but he's too busy being world-class at a hundred other disciplines too, and there are only so many hours in the day. Of course the fact that the Bat has all those other tricks to fall back on means that there aren't any guarantees as far as the outcome of a fight between them. But if it were just a question of martial arts ability, my money would be on Ben Turner. By a hair.
